As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Masi begins his work with a thorough consultation with the client to understand the nature of the presenting problems and then develops a treatment plan to help the client surmount the difficulties and achieve great joy, serenity and purpose in life. The psychotherapy models used by Dr. Masi are an integration of Cognitive Behavioral, Psychodynamic and Mindfulness-Based approaches. The approaches are selected and integrated depending upon the individual needs of each client.

Cognitive behavioral therapy helps the individual become aware of how inaccurate thoughts, beliefs and attitudes bring about painful emotional states and interfere with overall life functioning. Cognitive behavior therapy helps people identify their distressing thoughts and evaluate how realistic the thoughts are. The individual then learns ways to challenge and alter the negative thinking which results in more positive emotional states and the ability to better cope with life’s challenges. The emphasis is also consistently on solving problems and initiating behavioral change.

Mindfulness Based Approaches are designed to help the person focus attention on the present experience in a way that is both non-judgmental and self-compassionate. Therapy helps the person to learn practices that intentionally direct focus away from painful states of mind such as anxious or depressive thoughts, and instead observe and accept the present situation and all it has to offer.

Psychodynamic therapy helps the person explore the full range of their emotions including feelings and needs they may not be consciously aware of. Through this insight, the person can understand how their current behavior and mood are affected by unresolved issues and unconscious feelings and work through the unresolved issues so that they no longer negatively influence the person in the “here and now.”
